Problem

If $x \ast y = x + y^{2}$, then $2 \ast 3$ equals

$\text{ (A) }\ 8 \qquad\text{ (B) }\ 25 \qquad\text{ (C) }\ 11 \qquad\text{ (D) }\ 13 \qquad\text{ (E) }\ 7$

Solution

We can simply plug in $2$ and $3$ into $x + y^{2}$:

$2 \ast 3 = 2 + 3^{2} = \boxed {\textbf {(C) } 11}$
