The value of $1 + 3^{2}$ is

$\text{ (A) }\ 16 \qquad\text{ (B) }\ 10 \qquad\text{ (C) }\ 8 \qquad\text{ (D) }\ 6 \qquad\text{ (E) }\ 5$

Solution
