Problem

What is the value of $2 \times 9 - \sqrt{36} + 1$

$\text{ (A) }\ 7 \qquad\text{ (B) }\ 11 \qquad\text{ (C) }\ 8 \qquad\text{ (D) }\ 13 \qquad\text{ (E) }\ 14$

Solution

Using order of operations, we have:

$2 \times 9 - \sqrt{36} + 1 = 2 \times 9 - 6 + 1$

$=18 - 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = \boxed {\textbf {(D) } 13}$
