Problem

If $x = 2$ and $y = 1$, the value of $2x - 3y$ equals

$\text{ (A) }\ 11 \qquad\text{ (B) }\ 1 \qquad\text{ (C) }\ 4 \qquad\text{ (D) }\ 5 \qquad\text{ (E) }\ 3$

Solution

We can simply plug-in $x = 2$ and $y = 1$ into $2x - 3y$. Following order of operations, we have:

$2 \times 2 - 3 \times 1 = 4 - 3 \times 1$

$=4 - 3 = \boxed {\textbf {(B) } 1}$
