Problem

The circle graph shows the favourite ice cream flavours of those surveyed. What fraction of people surveyed selected either chocolate or strawberry as their favourite flavour of ice cream?

Solution 1

First, we can figure out the percentage of people that chose either flavor by adding the percentages together:

$50\% + 10\%$ = $60\%$

We can now turn this percentage into a fraction, and then reduce the fraction:

$60\% = \frac{60}{100} = \frac{60 \div 20}{100 \div 20} = \boxed {\textbf {(A) } \frac{3}{5}}$

Solution 2

We can turn the percentages of people that chose chocolate ice cream as their favorite, as well as strawberry, and add them together, and then simplify the ending fraction:

$50\% = \frac{50}{100}$

$10\% = \frac{10}{100}$

$\frac{50}{100} + \frac{10}{100} = \frac{60}{100} = \boxed {\textbf {(A) } \frac{3}{5}}$
