Problem

The value of $3^2 - (4 \times 2)$ is

$\text{ (A) }\ 4 \qquad\text{ (B) }\ 17 \qquad\text{ (C) }\ 1 \qquad\text{ (D) }\ -2 \qquad\text{ (E) }\ 0$

Solution

Following order of operations, we have:

$3^2 - (4 \times 2) = 3^2 - 8 = 9 - 8 = \boxed {\textbf {(C) } 1}$
